The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been married for eight years already. Their romance started when they met at the University of St. Andrews. However, it wasn't loved at first sight as they started out as friends before they dated.

According to Julia Mullaney, Prince William actually had a girlfriend when he first met Middleton. The second-in-line to the throne was reportedly dating Olivia Hunt.

Prince William and Hunt dated when he was first year at the school. It wasn’t specified how long their relationship was, but it was confirmed that she was in the same elite circle of British high society that the royals run in, which may explain how the two got together.

Prince William reportedly broke up with Hunt after seeing Middleton walked the runway in a see-through dress. It was the iconic moment that changed Prince William’s view about Middleton.

During the event, Prince William reportedly whispered to a companion, “She’s hot,” describing Middleton. When they were alone, he attempted to kiss Middleton, but she rejected his advances because he was cold to her when their friends were not around.

However, in Marcia Moody’s 2013 book “Kate: A Biography,” Prince William admitted that he immediately saw how special Middleton was when he first met her. He added that there was something in her that he wanted to explore.

“When I first met Kate I knew there was something very special about her,” Prince William said. “I knew there was something I wanted to explore there, but we ended up becoming friends for a while.”

Prince William and Middleton’s relationship wasn’t smooth sailing. In fact, they had two major splits and Middleton was “desperately upset” when the royal prince broke up with her.

It reportedly came to a point when Prince William felt that the fun was gone. He also felt claustrophobic in their relationship and decided to part ways.

But Middleton felt humiliated after their split because Prince William was seen gleefully telling a group of friends, “I am free.” He was also photographed dancing in a podium in Bournemouth with a pretty Brazilian girl.

In their engagement interview, the couple addressed their split. According to Prince William, they were still too young at the time and were figuring out what they wanted in life.
