Prince William has revealed one of the worst presents he had ever given Kate Middleton on BBC Radio 5 Live’s “That Peter Crouch” podcast.
On “That Peter Crouch” podcast, Prince William opened up about the early days of his relationship with Middleton. The Duke of Cambridge recalled getting Middleton binoculars when he was still courting his now-wife, whom he first met at the University of St. Andrews in 2003.
“She’s never let me forget that,” he shared on the July 29 episode of the podcast.
Prince William also said that he made sure to wrap the “really nice” pair of binoculars he got for Middleton.
“I was trying to convince myself about it. I was like, ‘But these are really amazing, look how far you can see!’” the father-of-three said.
But despite Prince William trying to justify his gift to her, the second in line to the throne said Middleton was not impressed.
“She was looking at me going, ‘They’re binoculars, what’s going on?’ It didn’t go well,” the Duke of Cambridge admitted. “Honestly, I have no idea why I bought her a pair of binoculars.”
Previously, Middleton opened up to Tom Brady on ITV News about the first time she encountered Prince William, narrating how she blushed and felt shy when they were introduced to each other. The Duke of Cambridge, meanwhile, revealed that he was attracted to his schoolmate because of her “naughty sense of humor.”
While the pair dated for years, they split in 2007 after Prince William was stationed at the House of Cavalry outside London, Us Weekly reported. He later said on ITV News that he and Middleton were still young and finding themselves when the breakup happened.
“At the time I wasn’t very happy about it, but it actually made me a stronger person. You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realized. I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger, and I really valued that time for me as well although I didn’t think it at the time,” Middleton said.
Fortunately, Prince William and Middleton rekindled their relationship a year after. They announced their engagement in November 2010 and tied the knot in the following year.
