Prince William’s ‘Dismissive-Sounding’ Words About Kate Middleton Reportedly A ‘Smokescreen’ To Hide Relationship
KEY POINTS
- Prince William once tried to hide his real feelings for Kate Middleton while being interviewed by reporters
- Prince William was in denial about wanting to marry Kate Middleton
- Prince William was trying to protect the Duchess of Cambridge
Prince William and Kate Middleton had been dating for 10 years before they decided to tie the knot.
In 2005, the royal couple vacationed in Klosters and reporters waited for them to make an engagement announcement. When they chanced upon the Duke of Cambridge to ask about his plans to marry his longtime girlfriend, he responded by dismissing the possibility of tying the knot with the Duchess of Cambridge.
Prince William’s statements were initially criticized because royal fans thought this meant that he wasn’t taking his relationship seriously. But in the book “William’s Princess,” royal author Robert Jobson said that this wasn’t necessarily the case.
Jobson said that Prince William’s dismissive-sounding words were actually a strategy that he came up with to hide his real feelings for Middleton. This way, he could protect her from the press and the constant media scrutiny.
“Kate had been in the same room but at no stage had William thought of introducing her to [reporters]. If Kate had serious feelings and hopes for her relationship with William, such public dismissal of the prospect of a proposal any time soon might naturally have upset her,” Jobson said.
Jobson went on to say that Prince William is not a fool so his obvious denial about a possible wedding with Middleton was carefully thought out. It was denied as a smokescreen to help cool the media frenzy surrounding their relationship.
“The prince knew exactly what he was doing; he would not open his heart about his private life, no matter how much drink had been taken, without thinking about it first. It was for show; a way of dampening down speculation about him and Kate; a way of protecting her from the press,” he said.
Meanwhile, Middleton reportedly became upset after she saw a group of photographers waiting outside her home in Berkshire simply because they thought that she got engaged with Prince William one her 25th birthday.
In the book “Kate Middleton: From Commoner to Duchess of Cambridge,” author Kate Shoup said that the Duchess of Cambridge is one to always smile in front of photographers. But during that time, she evidently had a tense encounter with them.
As such, Prince William was right to try and simmer down the rumors about their engagement years ago.
