Prince William’s ‘Frustrations’ With Royal Life Revealed; Difficult, Lonely Past Revisited

Prince William had some “frustrations” with his royal life.

The members of the royal family enjoy a number of privileges. However, they also yearn to live a normal life sometimes.

According to Andrew Morton in his 2011 book “William and Catherine,” the Duke of Cambridge auditioned for a student play. It was successful but he was not given the role because the producer was worried that if he stars in the play, the media instead of the townsfolk and his fellow students would dominate the audience in the small Byre Theatre during the four-night run of the play.

“The rejection symbolised for William the frustrations of fitting in to university life,” Morton wrote.

“However hard he tried, he could not just be an ordinary student.”

His frustrations contributed to Prince William’s indecision on whether he should continue at the university or not. He also found it difficult to be treated like a specimen on a petri dish who was being scrutinized, prodded and poked by all. Additionally, Prince William was tired sick of the people he didn’t know but kept on following him around.

Aside from living a difficult life, his younger years were lonely. Many reportedly considered it “uncool” to mention Prince William’s name in conversation. Also, any comment about the prince implies that his presence affected that person’s decision to study in the university and made that student a fan and a social climber.

No one wanted to be thought of as keen to meeting Prince William. Even the idea of saying “hi” to him at a party or in a pub was considered social suicide.

“This endless mutual wariness between crown and gown made for a lonely life, as William once admitted,” Morton continued. “Much as he wanted to be normal, to be one of the boys, even that was fraught with difficulties.”

Prince Harry reportedly also wanted to be an average person. At one point, he wanted to leave his royal life and give up all the privileges he enjoyed. However, Queen Elizabeth II convinced him to stay.
