She may be getting married in 2020, but that doesn’t mean Princess Beatrice is going to do things as extravagantly as the rest of the royal family—including her own direct relatives.

While her parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah, the Duchess of York, are known for their lavish lifestyles and her sister, Princess Eugenie, opted for the traditional pomp and circumstance of a royal wedding for her 2018 nuptials, Princess Beatrice is reportedly set on doing something very different. While her wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi can be lavish, the Princess allegedly wants to set a new precedent with an affair that is considerably more low-key.

According to Express UK, the couple’s wedding is expected to be paid for privately and won’t use taxpayer money for security costs, which means it likely will be overall less lavish, and this would mark a change for the York family, who are known for sometimes having more “extravagant” ways.

“It has been reported that Beatrice is opting for a low-key royal wedding when she married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi next year,” royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Express UK. “This makes total sense, I had thought that she would have chosen St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle like Eugenie as the Yorks so often seem extravagant, but this would have been controversial involving high security costs, estimated last year at £2 million for Eugenie’s wedding, from the public purse.”

“Though it was elegant and some 3 million people watched the ceremony live when it was broadcast on ITV, it was also the subject of criticism as neither Eugenie nor Beatrice are working royals though they do carry out occasional royal engagements,” he added.

In addition, the couple could be opting for something more low-key due to the current controversy surrounding her father and his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, as well as Edo’s own past. In fact, sources previously stated that Beatrice may want to do something less flashy out of respect for his ex, and the mother of his son, Dara Huang.

“Edo has a child, there's the situation with his ex, and Beatrice might just feel something more low-key might be more fitting,” a source said.

In addition, if the couple goes with something low-key, it could allow them to be more restrictive with their guest list, something Princess Beatrice may be keen on, as reports have claimed she doesn’t want her cousin, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, to attend, allegedly because she feels they upstaged her sister at her wedding with news of their pregnancy.

“Tension has been brewing between Harry and Meghan and the York girls for months now,” sources said, “Beatrice has confessed to friends that if she gets her way, they won’t be invited.”
