Episode 2 of the “Fatal Voyage: Diana Case Solved” podcast took a look at how Princess Diana struggled to deal with Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’ affair.

Following her wedding to Charles in 1981, Diana’s suspicions about a secret romance between her new husband and Camilla began to grow. According to former Vanity Fair editor, Tina Brown, the Princess of Wales struggled to stop her emotions from spiraling out of control.

“Diana felt the threat of Camilla very early. She was so deeply jealous, and became so deeply paranoid about Camilla that she, in a way, almost willed the truth to be as it was, which was, that they became reinvolved,” she explained.

Once she learned of their affair, Brown claimed Diana felt rejected by her husband and helpless in her fight against Camilla. “She always felt that Camilla was in their marriage and that she couldn’t somehow get her out,” the former editor said.

Since Princess Diana didn’t know her groom very well, Daily Mail royal correspondent, Richard Kay claimed she had a lot to worry about in her new marriage. “They’d only met on a dozen occasions before they got engaged,” he revealed.

“In the early days of their relationship, she had to call him ‘sir.’ I mean all of these things seem utterly laughable looking back now,” Kay added.

Although it took some time for the Princess of Wales to find evidence to confirm the affair, Diana’s former bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, claimed the royal staff was aware of Charles and Camille’s scandalous relationship.

“There was nothing secret about the Prince of Wales’ relationship with Camilla. Everybody inside Buckingham Palace knew exactly what was happening – this was the problem.”

Prince Charles and Princess Diana finalized their divorce in 1996. The Princess of Wales died in a car crash the following year. In 2005, Charles married Camilla, who took on the title, Duchess of Cornwall.
