Princess Diana Made $5 Per Hour, Washed Dishes As Nanny, Boss Says
Princess Diana previously worked as a nanny before she joined the royal family.
During an interview with Inside Edition, the late Princess of Wales’ life as a former nanny was revisited by her former boss Mary Robertson. The American businesswoman was living in London in 1980 and she needed a nanny for her son Patrick.
Robertson called the agency asking for help in finding a part-time nanny and they sent her an 18-year-old woman named Diana Spencer. Following her interview, Robertson said that she just fell in love with the young lady because she was wonderful.
At that time, Robertson had no idea that the Diana that was working for her was an aristocrat that belonged to one of England’s oldest families. Robertson found a clue about who Princess Diana really was inside the then nanny’s pouch. There was a deposit slip from Princess Diana’s bank.
“It said ‘Lady Diana Spencer’ and it was a deposit slip for Coutts and Company. And because I worked in finance, I knew that Coutts was the banker for aristocracy and the royal family,” Robertson said.
Princess Diana’s boss confronted her about her real identity and her connection with the Spencer clan, but she did not want to engage in it. The mom of two shrugged it off by asking Robertson if she would like her to take Patrick out for a walk.
Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom worked three times a week for Robertson and she got paid $5 per hour. She also helped wash the dishes and pick up toys. Twice a week, Princess Diana worked as a nursery school teacher.
Meanwhile, Robertson got another shock when she found out a few months later that Princess Diana was in a relationship with Prince Charles. During one of their conversations, Princess Diana told Robertson that when the latter leaves for work this morning, there would be press waiting at the end of the street. Princess Diana told her boss that the press is actually waiting for her.
The next time Robertson saw Princess Diana was at the church during her wedding to Prince Charles.
