A musical set to open in London which will tell the story of Princess Diana’s life has been seen as controversial, but the musical may be trying to skirt around some of that by keeping key people in her life out of the story altogether.

According to a report in The Daily Mirror, the musical, “Call Me Diana,” will be excluding much of the royal family from the story, including Queen Elizabeth, as well as Diana’s sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. In addition, her former husband, Prince Charles, is also going to feature minimally in the story, and an actor appearing as him will only be there for a brief scene depicting the couple’s wedding day.

Dodi Fayed, the man who was in the same limo as Princess Diana when it crashed in Paris in 1997 and killed them both, is also believed to have been excluded from the story, as show bosses reportedly insisted they will not do a re-enactment of the accident, and will instead introduce her death by using news reports to set the narrative tone.

According to The Sun, which spoke to Brian Watson, one of the people behind the show, this will all be excluded so as not to upset the royal family, mainly Princes William and Harry.

“The conspiracy theory thing is not relevant to the musical,” he said. “One of the parameters we set ourselves while writing this was we want a show about Diana that will not upset her sons. If they said, ‘We would like to see this,’ we would be delighted.”

“We felt it was totally wrong for a stage musical about this wonderful woman to end on that tragic death,” he added. “You don’t want the audience leaving the theatre mopping their eyes. You want them to leave totally in love with the icon that Diana became.”

What will be included in the show will be her famous interview with Martin Bashir, as well as her battle with bulimia.
