Princess Diana, Prince Charles Marriage Reportedly ‘Started To Crack’ After William’s Birth
Prince William’s birth may have signaled a major change in Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage.
Jennie Bond, a journalist for Daily Mail, recalled what it was like seeing the royal couple introduce their firstborn to the world outside St. Mary’s Hospital’s Lindo Wing in 1982. Bond, who was not a royal correspondent yet at that time, said that she was one of the many people that believed that Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage was a fairytale.
“William was barely 24 hours old and his parents had been married less than a year. But, though we didn’t know it at the time, cracks were opening up,” she wrote.
According to Bond, it took another 10 years for people to know that the Princess of Wales was suffering from bulimia since her wedding day. The mom of two’s pregnancy had also been wretched with chronic morning sickness, and she was consumed by insecurity regarding Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’ affair.
Bond got to know Princess Diana in later years, and the journalist was aware of how proud she was of her two sons.
“When she looked back on it, she concluded that it wasn’t the baby who had produced the depression: the birth had simply triggered everything else that was going on in her mind. There were tears, tantrums, and panic,” she wrote.
Two years after Prince William was born, Princess Diana and Prince Charles welcomed Prince Harry. They also introduced their second child to the world right outside St. Mary’s Hospital’s Lindo Wing.
In the Channel 4 documentary “Princess Diana’s Wicked Stepmother,” it was revealed that Prince Harry’s birth triggered Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla. Princess Diana’s former royal butler, Paul Burrell, said that Princess Diana cried to him on the night of Prince Harry’s birth.
He said that Princess Diana was aware that her marriage to Prince Charles was over by then because she already gave her an heir and a spare.
