After Princess Diana married Prince Charles, the couple appeared to have a perfect life. However, behind the palace walls, Princess Diana was in an emotional battle as she attempted to protect the monarchy and fans of the royal family.

As Diana spent more time in the royal family, she became aware of the importance of the family’s image and felt a “deep sense of duty and obligation” to the public.

In the book, “Diana: Her True Story,” Andrew Morton claimed Princess Diana would often push herself to her breaking point. Diana was eager to show her support for the royal family and please their fans.

As a result, the Princess of Wales felt “impelled her to keep up appearances,” no matter the consequences.

“A close friend says: ‘The public side of her was very different from the private side. They wanted a fairy princess to come and touch them, and turn everything into gold,’” the royal biographer wrote.

“‘All their worries would be forgotten. Little did they realize that the individual was crucifying herself inside,’” he continued.

According to Morton, Princess Diana was putting on a brave face to preserve the royal family, while battling bulimia.

“The ability to become this smiling persona in public was helped by the nature of bulimia, which is a disease where suffers can maintain their normal body weight -unlike its sister illness, anorexia nervosa where suffers slim to skin and bone,” the royal biographer wrote.

“At the same time, Diana’s healthy lifestyle of regular exercise, little alcohol and early nights gave her the energy to carry on with her royal duties.”

Despite her sacrifices, Morton claimed the Princess of Wales never received help from members of the royal family. “Diana, an unwilling international media celebrity, was having to learn on the hoof. There was no training, backup or advice from with the royal system. Everything was piecemeal and haphazard,” the royal expert revealed.

Princess Diana’s time in the royal family came to an end in 1996 when she finalized her divorce with Prince Charles. Although she lost Her Royal Highness title, Diana remained favored by the public and continues to be remembered for her compassion toward others.
