Princess Diana and Queen Mother didn’t always get along well, but they shared a surprising wedding link years ago.

In the Amazon Prime documentary “The Diana Story,” it was revealed that Queen Mother’s engagement ring featured a very popular stone among engagement rings. Lady Elizabeth was given a sapphire ring with diamonds by the Duke of York.

Prince Albert, the Duke of York, met Lady Elizabeth in 1921 and proposed to her, but she turned him down twice. The Queen Mother finally agreed to wed Prince Albert in 1923 following his third proposal. Their wedding took place at Westminster Abbey in the same year.

Several years later, Princess Diana sported a similar ring after her engagement to Prince Charles. The 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire was surrounded with 14 solitaire diamonds and was set on 18-carat white gold. Garrard, a renowned jeweler, designed the ring as inspired by a sapphire and diamond cluster brooch that was crafted for Prince Albert in 1840.

Princess Diana’s choice for a sapphire ring during her engagement was deemed to be controversial. According to Vogue, the members of the royal family were not pleased when they learned that the engagement ring was displayed in the catalog of Garrard. This meant that the ring wasn’t rare.

In related news, Princess Diana also made headlines this week after it was reported that she was alarmed by Prince William’s rebellious streak growing up. In Katie Nicholl’s book “William and Harry,” it was revealed that both Prince Charles and Princess Diana were both alarmed over the fact that Prince William needed more discipline.

“The Queen was increasingly aware that her grandson misbehaved. Mealtimes were an ordeal and would frequently end up with William throwing his supper across the table and being banished to the nursery by his exasperated parents,” she said.

According to Nicholl, Prince William was quite a handful growing up, and the Queen noticed it. Her Majesty encouraged Prince William and Prince Harry to blow off steam at her Scottish estate. She also reminded the siblings’ nanny that it was her job to instill discipline on them.
