Princess Diana’s ‘Revenge Dress’ Clever Strategy To Show Charles In Bad Light
Princess Diana’s revenge dress was a clever strategy to show Prince Charles in a bad light.
The late Princess of Wales’ fashion was praised up to the present time. One of the things that many could not forget is the black dress she wore when she attended the Serpentine Gallery’s summer party just hours after Prince Charles confessed his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. The netizens have different reactions to Princess Diana’s black off-the-shoulder dress.
Kirsten Ehrlich, a keen royal observer, said that Princess Diana’s revenge dress was a “clever strategy” and was the best example of “fashion politics.” It was black — a color royals only wear during funerals. Also, by wearing it, Princess Diana seemed to be giving a message that she was done with the rules and restrictions of the royal family.
The majority, if not all, agreed that Princess Diana was gorgeous in the dress. Rose Waugh, who has a B.A. History & Political Science degree, believed that Princess Diana wore it to show Prince Charles in a bad light because on the same day he confessed his affair with Camilla.
“The ‘revenge dress’ was an attempt by the press, to glorify Diana while putting Charles in a poor light,” Waugh wrote. “Diana was known privately for her temper tantrums when she didn’t get her own way.”
She stressed that physical beauty isn’t everything. Unlike Princess Diana, Camilla had the maturity that Prince Charles wanted for a stable relationship. On the other hand, Princess Diana “was a spoilt child who played the press to her advantage in order to make herself the ‘victim.’”
She pointed out that while Prince Charles had a long affair with Camilla, the People’s Princess had numerous affairs while still married to the Prince of Wales. For her, Princess Diana was unable to hold a man’s attention and affection.
After 25 years, Princess Diana’s revenge dress remains relevant. Many believe that it was the perfect statement for “freedom, confidence and sexiness” that the royal wanted to project.
Elois Moran, a 27-year-old fashion writer, felt empowered by Princess Diana to dress with intentions. She also pointed out how Princess Diana’s fashion came to be after she split from Prince Charles.
