Princess Margaret Shocked Royal Family By Doing These Rebellious Acts In Public
Princess Margaret was rebellious.
According to the Amazon Prime documentary “Princess Margaret: Her Real Life Story,” which first aired in 2007, Queen Elizabeth II’s younger sister had her own rebellious streak when she was a young woman. Princess Margaret shocked the royal family when she did scandalous acts in public.
“On duty she was obliged to do nothing but smile and make impersonal small talk, a royal whose only role was to be glamorously aloof,” the narrator said. “No wonder she began pushing at the barriers.”
Princess Margaret’s rebellious acts reportedly included “smoking in public” and “enlivening society events by showing off her film-star cleavage.” At the time, smoking in public was frowned upon especially for women and Princess Margaret’s status made it worse.
In the documentary “William and Harry Brothers in Arms,” royal editor Ingrid Seward recognized the struggles of Princess Margaret and Prince Harry who are both second-born kids. According to the expert, unlike their older siblings Queen Elizabeth II and Prince William, the younger siblings usually do not have a defined role in the royal family.
Seward noted that Princess Margaret never found happiness in the things she has done as a royal and was completely in the shadow of the monarch. Prince Charles’ sister, Princess Anne, also reportedly felt that she an “also-ran.”
In one interview, Princess Margaret revealed that growing up, Queen Elizabeth II was always pictured to be the “goody-goody one.” Since the storyline was “boring” they portrayed Princess Margaret as “wicked as hell.”
According to Judy Wade, Princess Margaret treated Sarah Ferguson cruelly after her split from Prince Andrew. The Duchess of York reportedly sent her flowers to renew their friendship. However, Princess Margaret sent it back with a note questioning Ferguson’s intentions for doing so after she damaged the royal family.
Wade added that Princess Margaret was “notorious” for her behavior. Her actions toward Ferguson indicate how the royal family treats somebody who has stepped out of the line except if that person is born royal.
Princess Diana also reportedly received a “wounding” and “excruciating” letter from Princess Margaret. According to Craig Brown in the BBC's documentary “Princess Margaret: The Royal Rebel,” Princess Margaret didn’t like Princess Diana’s decision to do secret interviews about her marriage with Prince Charles. The Queen’s sister was reportedly very cross with people who got into scandals, like Ferguson and Princess Diana.
