Princess Sofia And Prince Carl Philip Of Sweden Welcome Their First Child
Princess Sofia and her husband Prince Carl Philip of Sweden welcomed their first child, a baby boy, on Tuesday. It’s a time to rejoice for the Swedish royal family as last month Crown Princess Victoria gave birth to her and husband Prince Daniel’s second child. The Royal Palace of Sweden revealed that the couple have become parents to a “bouncing baby boy.”
“The Marshal of the Realm is delighted to announce that HRH Princess Sofia gave birth to a healthy child,” a statement on the palace’s Facebook page said. The little prince was born on April 19, Tuesday. He weighed about 7.9 pounds. Sofia delivered her son at Danderyd hospital in Stockholm.
The couple traveled from their new home at Drottningholm Palace to Danderyd Hospital, which is north of Stockholm on Tuesday evening. Carl Philip announced the arrival of his son in a press conference outside the hospital and thanked everyone for their good wishes. The new dad was present during the birth of his son, according to a statement from the palace.
Both mother and son are said to be in “good health.” “For me and my wife, this is obviously a great day with a lot of emotion,” said the 36-year-old Swedish royal. He added that words cannot describe his feelings.
Carl Philip said that he cut the umbilical cord and that his baby was dark-haired. When asked which parent the baby looked like, the prince said it was too early to tell. There was a lot of excitement about the new arrival as royal watchers and fans speculated whether the baby would be a boy or a girl.
Both Sofia and Carl Philip wanted the sex of the child to be a surprise. The new royal baby is fifth in line to the Swedish throne. Following in the footsteps of her sister-in-law Victoria, Sofia continued with her royal engagements throughout her pregnancy.
Meanwhile, Queen Silvia, who is in New York for a U.N. conference, said that she was very happy on hearing the news. She added that it was great to know that both Sofia and the baby were doing well. Silvia, who has become a grandmother for the fifth time, said that she was “walking on clouds.”
King Carl VIII Gustav will announce his new grandson’s name and title at a cabinet meeting in the next few days, according to Swedish royal tradition. It is the second royal birth in just under two months. Victoria, 38, gave birth to her son Prince Oscar, Duke of Skane on March 2.
