Police have started an investigation after a professional golfer and two other men were found dead following a shooting at a country club in Georgia.

Cobb Country Police said Eugene "Gene" Siller was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head at the Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw on Saturday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Witnesses told the outlet that the suspect's truck got stuck near the 18th green course. When Siller went to check, the suspect shot him.

Police arrived at the area and found the bodies of two other men in a white Ram 3500 pick-up truck on the golf course's green. One person, identified as Paul Pierson, was the registered owner of the pick-up truck, while the identity of the other man was not revealed. Both had gunshot wounds on their bodies.

The motive behind the shooting was not known.

On Sunday, Cobb County police spokeswoman Officer Shenise Barner said the suspect, whose identity was not revealed, was last seen heading toward Frey Lake Road and was at large.

Siller used to compete in Georgia's PGA Section golf tournaments since 2007. He previously worked at Summit Chase Country Club as its head golf pro and director of golf, the Gwinnet Daily Post reported.

The Georgia Section PGA expressed condolences and tweeted, "Thoughts and prayers for his family and the Pinetree Country Club family."

The course where the shooting occurred was near Kennesaw State University. Golf teams from the university would often use the course, NBC News reported.

Shortly after the shooting, KSU officials released an emergency alert to notify students and staff about the incident.

"The suspect has long hair, a white/tan shirt and dark-colored work pants," the university tweeted.

The last time a golf course death shook the nation was in 2011 when two suspects wearing ski masks tried to rob golfers at Deerfield Beach Club in Florida. Lataurus Randall, who fought back, was shot and he died at a hospital the next day. Melvin Philpart was not injured during the incident.

In 2006, an employee who was closing the pro shop at the Forest Oaks Golf Course in Florida was shot and killed by a robber.
