Protein Shakes, Oat Milk Included In Recall Of 53 Products Over Microbial Contamination
KEY POINTS
- The products have the "potential" for microbial contamination
- Customers who have the recalled products shouldn't consume them
- The products were "distributed nationally," but some were "limited in scope"
Lyons Magnus is voluntarily recalling 53 drinks because of possible microbial contamination. The recall includes various products such as protein shakes and oat milk.
The products have the "potential for microbial contamination," the company noted in an announcement shared on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website. This includes Cronobacter Sakazakii, which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explained to be a germ that's naturally found in the environment and tends to live in dry foods.
"Preliminary root cause analysis shows that the products did not meet commercial sterility specifications," the announcement noted.
Illnesses from cronobacter don't happen often. However, while it has been reported in "all age groups," it can be particularly deadly in infants. Those who are vulnerable or immunocompromised may also be at a higher risk of infection.
In the case of the current recall, there have been no "illnesses or complaints" reported about the products so far. The company added that products for infants aren't included in the recall.
In total, the recall affects 53 products under various brand names. This includes Lyons Ready Care, Lyons Barista Style, Pirq, Glucerna Original, Aloha, Intelligentsia, Kate Farms, Oatly, Premier Protein, MRE, Stumptown, and Imperial.
Customers may find the list of affected products under these brands on the FDA website. For instance, the recalled MRE products include the Cookies & Cream Protein Shake, Milk Chocolate Protein Shake, Salted Caramel Protein Shake and Vanilla Milk Shake Protein Shake in 4ct/330ml cartons.
Important information such as the affected UPCs, Lot Codes and Best By dates of the affected products are also provided, as well as photos of the packaging of these products.
"The 53 products were distributed nationally, while some products were limited in scope," the announcement noted.
Specifically, the affected Glucerna products were only sold in Costco, BJ's Wholesale Club and Sam's Club.
Those who have an affected product are advised to not consume them. Instead, they should either dispose of it or take it to the place where they bought it to get a refund.
Those with questions about the recall may contact the company at 1-800-627-0557.
