President Donald Trump’s speech Wednesday in which he recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel resulted in massive protests and condemnation from multiple regions around the world.
In his speech, the president told the State Department to start the process of shifting the American Embassy from the Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a move which he called "a step to advance the peace process" between Israel and Palestine. The President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, stated that the U.S. was making a "declaration of withdrawal" from the peace process between the two nations.
Here are some of the photos of the protests which took place around the world after Trump's speech.
Thousands of Malaysian Muslims protested outside the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. The protests were marked with chants of "Long live Islam" and "Destroy Zionists." There were also banners which said, "Free Palestine" and "Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine."
The protests were led by Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin who said, "Mr. President [Donald Trump], this is an illegal announcement. Jerusalem is an occupied territory. You must not even set foot in Jerusalem... The world will rise against the United States."
In Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, members of the Al Aqsa Working Group, United Development Party (PPP) were among the first ones to reach the U.S. Embassy in the city, carrying placards which read "Jerusalem is not Israel’s capital” and “We are with Palestine."
However, the protests in Jakarta were small because the police did not issue a permit for the events.
A huge number of people in Istanbul, Turkey, protested against the decision made by Trump on Wednesday. The protests were led by civil society organizations and NGOs which included the Istanbul wing of Anatolian Youth Association (AGD) and the Turkish Youth Foundation (TUGVA) in the city center where anti-Trump slogans were heard and banners supporting Palestine were seen.
Protesters also gathered in Cairo, the capital city of Egypt, to show solidarity against Trump's decision to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem. Activist, Ibrahim Fadoon said, "We completely reject any interference with any inch of Palestine. Palestine is being occupied by Zionists, but we will not let the Palestinian cause go, we are with the Palestinian people and we will not recognize the Zionists."
According to reports, 31 Palestinians were wounded due to clashes with the Israel military forces on Thursday in Gaza strip and around the occupied West Bank. Palestinians went out to the streets and started to throw stones and burnt tyres. The Isreali troops had to counter the protestors using live and rubber bullets along with tear gas.
Pakistan also came out to protest against Trump's decision, urging U.S. to think back on the decision so as to avoid "potentially grave repurcussions."
