PSG Open To Selling $80M Forward To Cut Costs After Mbappe's Contract Renewal [Details]
KEY POINTS
- Neymar is contracted with PSG until 2025
- He has been at PSG since 2017
- Neymar scored just 11 goals last season
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are reportedly willing to sell Neymar in the ongoing summer transfer window.
PSG will consider parting ways with Neymar if they receive an acceptable bid but the Brazilian forward will be hesitant to leave, reported Goal. However, International Business Times could not verify it independently.
After spending four memorable seasons at FC Barcelona, Neymar made a massive jump as he joined PSG in the summer of 2017 at a world-record transfer fee of $235 million.
Neymar, along with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, had formed one of the deadliest front three at Barcelona. PSG roped in Neymar with the aim of becoming a European soccer giant. However, the failure to reach the ultimate goal – winning the Champions League – has not helped Neymar's case at PSG.
In addition, PSG recently renewed Kylian Mbappe's contract, offering the French forward a lucrative deal. The Ligue 1 champions are now looking to cut costs by getting rid of Neymar's wages and receiving the right transfer fee would be of great help to the club, according to Marca.
However, Neymar's high price and wages would not make it easy for PSG. Neymar currently earns around $738,000 a week, according to Salarysport. Even though Neymar's market value is on a decline, it is still around $80 million, according to Transfermarkt.
Neymar managed just 13 goals and eight assists in 28 competitive appearances for PSG last season. Despite reclaiming the Ligue 1 crown, the Mauricio Pochettino-managed side was heavily criticized, especially after their Champions League exit to Real Madrid.
PSG fans lambasted Neymar and Messi and the former Barcelona duo was booed following the defeat to Real Madrid. PSG had also scrutinized Neymar's attitude and on-field development, the Goal report claimed.
However, Neymar wishes to continue at Parc des Princes next season as he signed a new contract just last year that would see him at the club till 2025. The player has netted 100 goals and 60 assists in 144 competitive appearances for PSG in the last five seasons.
