'Game Of Thrones' Season 5 Spoilers: Night's King, Benjen Stark, Yara Greyjoy And Balon Greyjoy Set To Appear?
"Game of Thrones" Season 5 will be remembered for many reasons, but its divergence from George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" has greatly impacted viewers and readers alike. With so many changes, even "ASOIAF" veterans are left wondering what will happen next. The changes in HBO's "Game of Thrones" could also have some interesting implications for Martin's novels (he still has two to write in his planned seven-book series) and the fate of our favorite characters. The "Game of Thrones" Season 5 finale is a few weeks away, but there is some interesting cast news regarding the return of several important characters. Let the speculation begin!
Warning: "Game of Thrones" Season 5 spoilers and "A Song of Ice and Fire" discussion ahead.
If the IMDb cast list for the "Game of Thrones" Season 5 finale is accurate, the Night's King, Benjen Stark, Yara Greyjoy and Balon Greyjoy will be appearing in episode 10. Cersei, Jaime, Margaery Tyrell, Tommen and Myrcella will be sitting out of this episode, based on the list. Daenerys, Arya, Sansa, Jon, Stannis, Tyrion, Doran Martell, the Sand Snakes, Roose and Ramsay Bolton and Theon/Reek will be featured in the finale. IMDb also lists the title for the episode as "Winter."
Benjen Stark has not been seen since "Game of Thrones" Season 1. Ned's younger brother is a First Ranger of the Night's Watch and helped train Jon at Castle Black. Benjen disappeared after heading to the Haunted Forest and it's unclear if he is alive or dead. Martin previously debunked the theory that Benjen was Coldhands -- a White Walker that helped Sam beyond the Wall.
IMDb lists the Night's King appearing in the final three episodes of "Game of Thrones" Season 5. This figure has only been mentioned in Martin's "ASOIAF" series and was a Lord Commander of the Night's Watch who fell in love with a female White Walker. The Night's King held the Night's Watch captive and it took the team of the King of the North -- Brandon the Breaker -- and the King-Beyond-the-Wall -- Joramun, to defeat him.
There is some confusion as to who the Night's King is on the show. In "Game of Thrones" Season 4 HBO quickly changed the character's description from Night's King to White Walker in its viewer's guide, which led to plenty of speculation about the character. Richard Brake -- the actor who played the character in Season 4 -- will reprise his role in the upcoming episodes. If the IMDb listing is accurate, that would be an even bigger departure from "ASOIAF" and we may learn even more about the White Walker city and their society.
Yara Greyjoy hasn't been seen since "Game of Thrones" Season 4. Yara launched a rescue mission for her brother at the Dreadfort. Theon/Reek refused to go with her and Yara was forced to return to the Iron Isles. Balon Greyjoy hasn't been seen since Season 3. It will be interesting to see how the show handles the return of these characters.
Major talking points of "Game of Thrones" Season 5 have been the lack of Greyjoys -- Victarion and Euron have yet to be cast -- and the status of Balon. Based on the "ASOIAF" timeline, Balon should have been dead around Season 3, but he's still alive. The show could use the penultimate episode -- "The Dance of Dragons" -- to bring back the Iron Isles with Yara's return and the season finale could feature Balon's death and another appearance by Yara to set up a "Game of Thrones" Season 6 storyline.
All of this casting speculation is based on IMDb listings, which means there could be even more surprises in the last three episodes of "Game of Thrones" Season 5.
