'Game Of Thrones' 'Sesame Street' Parody Is A Much Happier, Nonlethal Battle For The Iron Throne
Death, scandal, drama and scheming are all part of the quest for the Iron Throne in "Game of Thrones." There have been plenty of shocking deaths in Westeros, but the same can't be said for the land of Jesteros. "Sesame Street" now offers a fun parody called "Game of Chairs" that sees four people vying for the throne in a game of musical chairs.
In the short film, there's Grover Bluejoy and three Iron Throne-inspired chairs made up of baseball bats, golf clubs and pingpong paddles. The four Muppet competitors look like Joffrey Lannister, Cersei Lannister, Robb Stark and Daenerys Targaryen, the "mommy of dragons." This version of "Game of Thrones" features plenty of fun little nods to the show that fans will instantly recognize. There's a Muppet Melisandre who pops up to say, "The monster is blue and full of errors" -- a riff on "the night is dark and full of terrors." As for who will be the new king or queen of Jesteros? You'll just have to watch it for yourself.
This is not the first time "Sesame Street" has parodied a hit television show. There's "House of Bricks" and "Birdwalk Empire," and even "Sons of Anarchy" has been reimagined with Muppets. "Law and Order," "The Deadliest Catch," "True Blood" and "Grey's Anatomy" are just a few other modern examples. There's "Monsterpiece Theater," hosted by Cookie Monster alter ego Alistair Cookie. The parodies have covered a broad spectrum and draw inspiration from everything from musicals to French dramas. There have been spoofs of "The 400 Blows," "Gone With the Wind," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "Waiting for Godot" and the Spalding Gray monologue "Monster in a Box." And who can forget "Twin Beaks"?
For fans of the actual show, "Game of Thrones" Season 5 premieres on HBO on Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT.
