Governors Ball 2015 Lineup: Drake, The Black Keys And Deadmau5 Headline NYC's Biggest Music Festival [PLAYLIST]
Music festival season has begun, and Governors Ball, New York City's biggest fest, announced its lineup Tuesday. Drake, the Black Keys, Deadmau5, Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Rey, My Morning Jacket and Björk are among the headliners, but the real value of any festival is the undercard.
With so many acts scheduled to play across three days, figuring out what bands to see can be overwhelming. We're here to help and have created a playlist of artists to check out for Governors Ball 2015.
"This June will be a celebration of our 5th anniversary as NYC's premier music festival. We would like to send our most sincere thanks to the fans and artists across the globe that have helped make Governors Ball what it is today, as well as to the Randall's Island Parks Alliance, which has been an incredible partner to us over the years. See everyone June 5th! It'll be one hell of a party," the fesitval's founder Jordan Wolowitz said in a statement. Governors Ball started out as a one-day festival and has expanded to a three-day festival that has generated $40 million in economic benefits for the city and more than 300 new jobs. Governors Ball 2014 featured Outkast, Jack White and Vampire Weekend as headliners.
New York City is a tricky place to hold a festival since it's a guaranteed tour stop for bands. There are stadiums just outside of the city and arenas such as Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center for larger acts. Up-and-coming acts have their choice of venues ranging in capacity from a few hundred to a few thousand. To ensure that even the most jaded concertgoer would want to attend, Governors Ball 2015 features many acts that haven't played NYC in several years. Deadmau5 has not played the city since 2011 while Lana Del Rey, Florence and the Machine and Björk have not visited NYC since 2012.
Another way that Governors Ball 2015 is attempting to win over fans is by the sheer volume of breakthrough acts playing the festival. Charli XCX, Vance Joy, St. Vincent, Future Islands, Angus & Julia Stone, Tame Impala, Echosmith and the War on Drugs saw huge bumps in popularity over the past year. The undercard also features plenty of veteran festival acts such as Hot Chip, Flying Lotus, the Decemberists and Chromeo. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Ryan Adams, "Weird Al" Yankovic and Conor Oberst also add plenty of value for festivalgoers.
Governors Ball 2015 takes place from June 5 through June 7 at Randall's Island. Three-day passes cost $260 before fees, and there are VIP and transportation options. Check out our Governors Ball 2015 playlist below.
