Groundhog Day 2015

It's the annual event you've been waiting for and we're not talking about the Super Bowl. Groundhog Day 2015 takes place Monday, which means all the attention will be on a rodent from Gobbler's Knob, Pennsylvania. Punxsutawney Phil will emerge from his burrow on Monday at around 7:20 a.m. EST with events scheduled throughout the week.

What Phil sees as he leaves his burrow could determine if there will be an early spring or another six weeks of winter. According to the tradition, if Phil sees his shadow that means we should prepare for more winter weather. If Phil does not see his shadow, spring is just around the corner. The annual event is based off of Candlemas Day, an early Christian holiday brought to the country by German settlers, according to Stormfax. Candlemas Day fell in the midpoint of the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox and if the weather was fair -- or if the sun came out -- that would mean more winter weather.

Punxsutawney Phil made his debut on Feb. 2, 1887. Based on the legend, there has only been one "Phil." The groundhog's handlers, known as the Inner Circle, have been giving Phil an elixir each summer to extend his life by another seven years.

Phil is not the only prognosticating groundhog. Ohio has Buckeye Chuck and Michigan has Woodchuck Woody, to name just two groundhogs. New York has its own groundhog: Staten Island Chuck. Groundhog Day 2014 did not go well for Chuck or New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

It was the first time handling Chuck for de Blasio and the groundhog has a reputation, previously biting Mike Bloomberg when he was mayor. Unfortunately, de Blasio dropped Chuck, or Charlotte who was subbing for her sleeping brother, and the groundhog died a week after the incident. Zoo officials said Charlotte died of internal injuries that were unrelated to the de Blasio incident, the New York Daily News reported.

If you want to add more stakes to Groundhog Day, there are prop bets tied to Super Bowl 2015.

Another round of snow is expected to hit the northeast, which could hinder Phil's abilities. The Groundhog Day 2015 live stream can be viewed at VisitPa.com.
