'Sex Box' And All The Questions You Have About The Show Before The Series Premiere
In "Sleeper," Woody Allen wakes up in 2173 after being cryogenically frozen in 1973 to a world that makes no sense to him. Back in '73, he was a clarinet player who ran a health food shop, but the future is a strange place where fat, steak and cream pie are considered healthy. There's also a tall container called the Orgasmatron that does what its name suggests. Well, in the year 2015 the Orgasmatron doesn't seem too far-fetched now that we have "Sex Box," a reality show premiering Friday.
While many people will be busy marathoning "House of Cards" Season 3 on Netflix Friday night, the groundbreaking "Sex Box" will be debuting on WE. In the show, a couple enter the box, have sex, then come out to talk about the experience. Does what happens in the box stay in the box? Not necessarily, as the couples discuss their experience with a panel of experts in an attempt to mend their relationship problems.
" 'Sex Box' is gearing up to be a monumental way of helping couples overcome some of their biggest problems in a way no therapy has done before," WE says in its description of the show. "Amazingly honest, provocative and yes, dare we say it, educational, 'Sex Box' may just be the start of the next sexual revolution in the United States."
"Sex Box" is based on a U.K. series of the same name. While we don't know all the details regarding WE's version, participants in the British version have shared their experiences. A report from the Guardian reveals that couples spend 30 minutes inside the box. They sign a contract that prevents them from detailing everything that happens in the box, but they say it's a basic hotel room with condoms, tissues and an emergency switch.
There also is some science behind the show's premise. After sex, humans are flooded with oxytocin, a hormone linked to love, social interactions and trust. Many studies point to these positive aspects of the hormone, but there are other studies that suggest oxytocin may enhance memories of negative experiences, according to Scientific American.
