Smokers Burn Through The Bucks
There are numerous studies on how smoking affects your health, but it also affects your wallet. Wallet Hub released a new report detailing the lifetime cost of smoking for pack-a-day smokers.
In New York, the tobacco cost per smoker is $1.53 million during their adult lifespan, from the age of 18 to 69, the average age of death for smokers. To determine the tobacco cost per smoker, Wallet Hub "took the average cost of a pack of cigarettes in each state, multiplied that figure by the total number of days in 51 years, and calculated the amount of return a person would have earned by instead investing that money in the stock market over the same period." Alaska had the highest tobacco cost per smoker at $1.55 million, followed by New York, Rhode Island ($1.48 million), Connecticut ($1.46 million) and Massachusetts ($1.46 million).
Are You Sitting Down?
Whether it’s during the daily commute, at work or at home, everyone sits. Sitting for an extended period of time can increase your risk of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and early death, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Even if you exercise regularly, extended sitting increases your risk of dying from any cause by 16 percent, which means you can't try to undo hours of sitting with five days of going to the gym. The research cited analyzed more than 40 studies on the effects of prolonged sitting and found the greatest increased risk was for Type 2 diabetes, followed by cardiovascular disease.
There are some recommended ways to reduce how much you sit throughout the week, such as standing up for a minute every half hour at work, and you should continue to exercise regularly.
