Start Spreading The News: What You Should Read Today [01/26/15]
A lot of awards were handed out over the weekend. "Birdman" and "Orange Is the New Black" were among the winners for the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2015. On the beauty pageant side of things, Miss Colombia, Paulina Vega, was crowned Miss Universe 2014. At the box office, "American Sniper" added another $64.4 million to its haul, easily winning the weekend. "The Boy Next Door" finished in second place with $15 million. Looking ahead to the work week, here are a few developing stories you should follow today.
Nor'easter Is Here
You're going to hear a lot about the blizzard set to disrupt most of the northeast. The National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center has issued blizzard warnings for coastal areas from New Jersey to Maine. Winter storm watches and warnings are in effect for parts of West Virginia, Delaware and Maryland. "It will move along the Northeast coastline from Monday night and into Tuesday. This will bring a significant amount of snow and blustery winds across the Northeast and New England ... causing blizzard conditions. Snow totals of one to three feet will occur from the New York City area into southern and eastern New England," reads the National Weather Service’s storm summary. Expect plenty of delays and flight cancellations due to the storm.
"My message to New Yorkers is to prepare for something worse than we have seen before," NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Sunday.
The major storm will also stir debate regarding naming conventions. You'll see many reports of Winter Storm Juno, a moniker created by the Weather Channel, but the storm does not have an official name per the National Weather Service.
The NFL Arrives On YouTube
You may think Google's streaming service has everything, and you'd be wrong. YouTube may be the destination for music videos, but to watch highlights of an NFL game, viewers have to go to the official team page or the league's home page. New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. had what many considered the best catch ever, but you couldn't experience that moment in full HD on YouTube. On Monday, YouTube announced a partnership with the NFL, which means you'll be able to watch all of the Super Bowl highlights on the streaming site, the Associated Press reported.
Genetically Modified Killer Mosquitoes
A swarm of genetically modified killer mosquitoes may be deployed in the Florida Keys, the Washington Post reported. While this may sound like terrible news, the modified pests are actually the good guys as they attempt to wipe out other killer mosquitoes that could spread dengue fever and chikungunya. The mosquitoes were modified with E. coli and herpes simplex virus. When they mate with mosquitoes in the wild, the larvae will die. Only male mosquitoes -- they don't bite -- will be released pending approval from the Food and Drug Administration.
A Massive Asteroid Passes By Earth
An 1,800-foot asteroid will be passing just 745,000 miles from Earth on Monday. Asteroid 2004 BL86's flyby poses no threat to Earth, but scientists are excited for the chance to observe the huge space rock. Stargazers will be able to view the asteroid with a telescope, but if you can't see due to the blizzard, Slooh has a live stream beginning at 11 a.m. EST.
