Start Spreading The News: What You Should Read Today [12/31/14]
The search for AirAsia Flight 8501 entered its fourth day Wednesday with search teams recovering more bodies and debris, but that's not the only news for today. With New Year's Eve celebrations scheduled around the world, here's what you should be reading today.
New Year's Eve Around The World
Sydney kicked off New Year's Eve with a massive fireworks celebration that brought more than 1.5 million people to Sydney Harbor Bridge, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. The celebration also included a family fireworks display, musical performances and a tribute to the two individuals who were killed during the Sydney siege, Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson. "The small tribute tonight is to say Sydney remembers.... It is in memory of the two young and talented people we lost because of that siege, and we also remember the trauma that the hostages experienced and the bravery of the police," Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said during the event.
While Sydney is the first big New Year's Eve 2015 event, it is not the first city to celebrate a new year. That honor goes to Kiritimati, or Christmas Island. Residents of the tiny island member of the Republic of Kiribati are the first people to celebrate 2015. Baker and Howland Islands will be the last people to celebrate New Year's Eve.
"Bae" And "Swag" Get Banned
Michigan's Lake Superior State University released its annual list of words banished from the queen's English for misuse, overuse and general uselessness. "Bae" was the clear winner among nominated words. "A dumb, annoying word," James Becker, from Holly, Michigan, succinctly sums up the argument against the word that was retroactively given actual meaning -- not just a term of endearment but now means "before anyone else."
"Polar vortex" was also on the list due to the way mainstream media misuses the scientific term. "Hack," "skill set," "swag," "foodie," "curate" and "friend-raising" were a few other words the committee chose to ban.
The Most Anticipated Movies Of 2015
There are plenty of highly anticipated movies set to be released in 2015, but there's only one unanimous must-see movie. Fandango released its list of most anticipated movies of 2015, and it should come as no surprise that "Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens" tops the list. "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 2" rounded out the top three. Even though "Avengers" and the final installment of "The Hunger Games" were bested by "Star Wars" in a poll, the films are expected to be huge at the box office.
