Super Bowl 2015 Groundhog Day Prop Bet: You Can Win Big On Punxsutawney Phil Parlay
If you were worried there would be no prop bets combining the Super Bowl and Groundhog Day, Bovada has you covered. There is an interesting Groundhog Day parlay covering all the possible outcomes. In the long list of prop bets from the popular sports betting site Bovada, you can put your money on the four different scenarios involving Punxsutawney Phil, the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots.
If you participate in the Groundhog Day parlay at Bovada, you'll have to pay attention to Phil and his shadow on Monday. In the first parlay, which has odds of +220, if Phil sees his shadow and the Patriots win, you can win $2.20 for every $1 bet. At +275 odds, if Phil does not see his shadow and the Patriots win, every $1 earns $2.75. Phil seeing his shadow and the Seahawks winning is at +225, which gets you $2.25 for every $1. Phil not seeing his shadow and a Seahawks win has the same odds as the Pats scenario. Bovada provides standard prop bets involving the coin toss, halftime show, national anthem, the color of Bill Belichick's hoodie and mentions of "deflated" balls.
If you care more about Groundhog Day than the Super Bowl, there are odds for that as well, courtesy of Bwin.com. Phil seeing his shadow has odds of 1.25 (1/4), which earns you 25 cents for every $1 spent. Phil not seeing his shadow has the better odds at 3.50 (5/2), which gets you $2.50 for every $1. Since 2005, Phil has seen his shadow seven times. In 2004, Groundhog Day and the Super Bowl fell on the same day and Phil saw his shadow. In 2013, Phil did not see his shadow.
Groundhog Day is an annual event that originates from rural Gobbler's Knob, east of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The tradition is based on Candlemas Day, which was brought to America by German settlers in the 1700s, according to Stormfax. While Phil may be beloved, he's not really accurate, with Stormfax estimating a 39 percent accuracy for the groundhog's predictions of when winter weather will end.
