Valentine's Day 2015: The Most Romantic Art Throughout History
Saturday is Valentine's Day, and whatever you make of the holiday, it's hard to deny that love has profoundly affected and inspired society throughout history. Artists especially have been moved to create works that have evoked that powerful emotion to people around the world. Here's a top 10 of the most romantic oil paintings of all time, compiled by OverstockArt.com.
The site tracked 4 million page views to its Romantic Art Gallery over the last year and found that people could not help but click on Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss." Attracting 12 percent of viewers, the 1908-1909 painting depicting a couple in a passionate embrace came in at No. 1. Frederic Leighton's "The Fisherman and the Syren," painted between 1856 and 1858, was second. A close look at the top five is below.
1. Gustav Klimt -- 'The Kiss'
2. Frederic Leighton -- 'The Fisherman And The Syren'
3. Sandro Botticelli -- 'The Birth Of Venus'
4. William-Adolphe Bouguereau -- 'First Kiss'
5. Edouard Manet -- 'In Pere Lathuille'
Art is subjective, so don't expect to find a conclusive verdict on what is the most romantic painting ever. In 2012, the U.K.'s Art Fund polled 2,000 individuals about the most romantic art currently displayed in British museums. Frank Bernard Dicksee's "Romeo and Juliet" topped their list and Auguste Rodin's sculpture "The Kiss" came in second place. If you're looking for something a bit more contemporary, Mic had a list last year that included Pablo Picasso's "The Dream" and "Leda Atomica" by Salvador Dali. If you happen to be in New York, you can check out this list compiled by Vogue of museums with the most romantic paintings.
If painting's not your thing, then note that love also has inspired plenty of buildings, most famously the Taj Mahal. We hear there's plenty of music about love, too.
