Wegmans
Wegmans, which offers lots of dining options in addition to its aisles of groceries and other goods, is coming to Brooklyn! Wegmans

The New York Times smartly identified the major news regarding a redevelopment deal for Brooklyn's Navy Yard: Wegmans is coming to New York City. Sure, Admiral's Row will get a few more businesses as well, but the popular family-owned supermarket chain is the real news for everyone.

In some ways, Wegmans is like an In-N-Out Burger, the stuff of legend defined by regional access. Headquartered near Rochester, New York, the company's stores are located in western New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland and Virginia.

Wegmans is a supermarket that has everything. People go there just for dinner or lunch, their in-house restaurants are that good. There's a burger bar, a seafood bar, Amore Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar, all-natural and organic meals at Next Door, Market Cafe for a sandwich or pizza, and the Pub. Granted, not all of these restaurants are located in every Wegmans, but chances are the Brooklyn location will have a decent selection of food to choose from.

"To its devotees, Wegmans strikes the balance between the variety of a Whole Foods, the prices of a Trader Joe’s and the scale of a Walmart," the Times said of the appeal of the supermarket. The Brooklyn Wegmans will measure around 74,000 square feet -- tiny by Wegmans' standards but enormous for NYC. H&M plans a 63,000-square-foot store at Herald Square, while Urban Outfitters' shop in Herald Square has enough room for a coffee bar and hair salon. Red Hook's Fairway and Gowanus' Whole Foods will be smaller than Wegmans by around 20,000 square feet, according to the Times.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Wegmans will have up to 250 full-time employees and up to 600 total jobs. This will be the 86th Wegmans store.

So, Wegmans is big, has some good restaurants and decent prices. What's the big deal, right? Well, how about a BuzzFeed list to convince you of all the reasons to check it out? Amazing bread, cheese, candy, international groceries, florists, fresh ground nut butter and some of the best "generic" products money can buy. Bloggers have been won over by it, and there's even a Tumblr dedicated to Wegmans. As others explain, it's all about the little details that make Wegmans so great. Consumer Reports named it best supermarket in its latest rankings published in April.
