In a case of animal cruelty, a puppy was found abandoned in an armchair on the side of a road in Brookhaven, Mississippi.

The incident came to light after a woman spotted a truck dumping the chair and the puppy on the side of the road along with a television. The unidentified woman immediately called animal control. In a Facebook post Monday, Sharon Norton, the Brookhaven animal control officer, said the animal looked malnourished and would not leave the chair as it was waiting for its owner to come back.

“To the person that dumped this chair, your puppy was waiting for you to come back, slowly starving to death because it was afraid to leave the chair to find food. Shame on you for doing this to this puppy...but one day Karma will meet up with you,” Norton wrote.

The animal was taken to a shelter where it will be treated and fed for a few days before it was up for adoption. Details regarding the dog's breed and age remained unknown.

In a similar incident in Canada earlier this month, a dog and her nine puppies were found abandoned in a sealed box at a garbage dump. The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA), said a good Samaritan found the dog, a border collie-husky mix, and its puppies in a sealed box. The dogs were taken to a vet before being transported to a shelter.

“There is no excuse for simply walking away from a pet and leaving them to die. Abandoning animals is against the law and individuals can be prosecuted for their crime,” SPCA spokesperson Lorie Chortyk said. Speaking about the mother dog, Chortyk said, “Casey is a bit thin and focusing on caring for her babies. Staff say she’s a timid but sweet dog.”
