‘QAnon Shaman' Offers To Testify At Trump's Impeachment Trial
A lawyer representing Jacob Chansley, the self-proclaimed "QAnon Shaman," said his client now feels betrayed by former President Donald Trump and is willing to testify at his impeachment trial in the Senate.
Chansley, also known as Jake Angeli, is the man seen in shocking images at the Capitol Hill riots on Jan. 6 -- shirtless, carrying a large spear, and wearing a furry, horned hat and American-flag face paint.
Facing misdemeanor charges for entering a restricted area and disorderly conduct, his lawyer says his client is ready to speak out against Trump after being denied a presidential pardon.
“He felt like he was betrayed by the president,” attorney Albert Watkins was quoted by CBS News as saying Friday.
Trump issued a flurry of pardons in his final days in office, but left out some high-profile cases such as Wisconsin shooter Kyle Rittenhouse.
Watkins said he hasn’t spoken yet with members of the Senate since his client came forward with an offer to testify, but said it is important for lawmakers to hear from someone with direct experience with the riots.
Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate is scheduled to begin Feb. 9. As president, Trump was charged with inciting an insurrection on Jan. 6 during a speech at the Ellipse in Washington D.C. He urged supporters to march on the Capitol building as lawmakers convened to certify results in the Electoral College that confirmed Joe Biden as the 46th president.
A federal court filing from Jan. 15 cites plans “to capture and assassinate elected officials” during the riots, words used to keep Chansley locked up until a hearing. Protestors inside the Capitol building issued threats against then-Vice President Mike Pence for his refusal to overturn the election.
Watkins previously said his client was not that extreme.
“He felt like he was answering the call of our president,” he told CNN in early January. “My client wasn't violent. He didn't cross over any police lines. He didn't assault anyone.”
