Qatar World Cup: Gareth Southgate Provides Crucial Injury Update On Harry Kane

England head coach Gareth Southgate has provided an injury update on Three Lions captain Harry Kane after their World Cup opener against Iran.

Kane was substituted in the second half of England's 6-2 thumping victory over Iran in their Group B match Monday in Qatar. The English skipper was seen limping off the field after a poor tackle from Iran's center-back Morteza Pouraliganji.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker, who provided two assists in England's latest win but could not score, was substituted in the 76th minute, with Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson replacing him. Kane was spotted with an ankle strap after the game.

A few minutes before Kane's substitution, Southgate was forced to remove defender Harry Maguire, who was replaced by Spurs midfielder Eric Dier.

In a post-match interview, Southgate explained that Maguire was replaced because he was ill and not due to a concussion.

"Other than that [Maguire's illness worry], [I] haven't seen anything of concern [about injuries]... I think Harry [Kane]'s fine," Southgate told reporters.

Kane has had issues with his ankle in the past. He was ruled out on five separate occasions, having missed 20 games for Spurs due to problems with his ankles. Even though Southgate is not concerned about the player's latest injury, England will still have to wait to find out the full extent of Kane's injury.

Jude Bellingham, who clinched a goal on his World Cup debut, opened the scoring for England before Bukayo Saka also made his maiden World Cup appearance special by netting a brace. The other three goals for England were scored by Raheen Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish.

After the game Monday, Kane credited his side for their fine performance but did not mention his injury.

"Obviously a really good start to the World Cup campaign. Full credit to the boys. It's never easy getting off to a winning start at a major tournament, and to score six goals shows we're in a really good place. There's still a lot of work to do. Of course, we know that there's a long way to go. But overall, [it was] really pleasing. Congrats to Jude for his first England goal, no better place to do it. Bukayo [was] on fire with two great finishes," Kane said in a video posted on Twitter.

"Everyone out there today did their country proud. We move onto the next one now. Let's keep it going for the next game," the Spurs striker added further.

England's next game is on Friday against the United States Men's National Team (USMNT).
