Queen Consort Camilla is reportedly set for a title change ahead of the coronation of King Charles. According to reports, Buckingham Palace is looking to drop "Consort" from her title so she could be known as Queen Camilla instead of Queen Consort Camilla.

Queen Elizabeth made it known before her death that Camilla would be called Queen Consort when she dies. In February, the late monarch issued a public statement expressing her desire for her daughter-in-law to be addressed as such once then-Prince Charles ascends to the throne.

After the Queen's death, on Sept. 8, Camilla went from being called the Duchess of Cornwall to Camilla to the Queen Consort. However, new reports suggest that King Charles' wife will be known simply as Queen Camilla by the time of his coronation on May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey. During the historic event, Camilla would be crowned alongside the new king.

In Britain, the Queen Consort refers to the wife of the reigning king. Before Camilla, the last Queen Consort of Britain was Queen Elizabeth, later known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Despite being technically a Queen Consort when her husband King George VI reigned as king, she was known to all, not as Queen Consort Elizabeth but simply as Queen Elizabeth.

It remains to be seen whether or not the Palace would officially drop Consort from Camilla's title before the coronation. Either way, it is likely that her title would be shortened to Queen in practice, similar to how the late Queen Mother was referred to even without an official title change.

Meanwhile, the decision to change Camilla's title from Queen Consort to Queen will reportedly depend on public opinion in the months leading up to the coronation. In 2005, the Palace issued a statement saying that Camilla would be known as Princess Consort and not Queen Consort when Charles becomes King. This was done to break away from royal tradition since public opinion at the time was not in favor of Camilla, who had an affair with then-Prince Charles during his marriage to the late Princess Diana.

As public opinion of the then-Duchess improved over the years, the royal household changed that decision earlier this year.
