According to Express, there are fears that the Queen might step down after her grandson Prince William takes more duties. In 2017, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Sapphire Jubilee that marked her 65th year on the throne.

Royal expert Angela Mollard said in the “Royals” podcast that the Queen has given Middleton the family action charity which she held for 65 years. Mollard felt that it was such a long time.

“There’s so much work we never see when they collate the engagements and look at who’s done the most work,” she added.

Mollard pointed out that there are many members of the royal family who are going to step up this year. The Prince of Wales has been doing it and Prince William is also doing the same which only intensified the speculations that the Queen might abdicate soon.

“In fact lots of members of the Royal Family are going to be stepping up this year. We’ve already seen it with Charles,” she added. “We’ve seen William at a lot more high-profile events, a lot of international trips particularly to countries that need a bit of care and attention. I think the fact that William’s doing more of that suggests he’s really stepping into it.”

The Queen’s abdication has become a hot topic following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s bombshell announcement that they were stepping back as senior members of the royal family. Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead announced that the odds of the Queen abdicating this year following the turbulent start of the year has been slashed to 5/1.

However, not everyone agrees with the idea of Queen Elizabeth II stepping down from the throne. According to Sherrie Hewson, the monarch should not abdicate adding that “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.”

Also, she is convinced that everybody adores the Queen, so there is no reason for her to abdicate. Meanwhile, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams is convinced that Queen Elizabeth II will never step down.

“It is important to emphasise the Queen will never abdicate,” Fitzwilliams explained. “Gradually we would expect the Queen to scale down her duties but never to abdicate as she believes in total dedication to duty and in the oath she took to serve her whole life when she was 21.”
