Queen Elizabeth II Gives Prince Philip A ‘Special Honor’ On Their Anniversary
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
And to commemorate the special occasion, Queen Elizabeth II decided to give her husband a special honor called the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO). According to BBC News, the honor is given by the monarch to recognized distinguished personal service to her.
A statement from the Buckingham Palace was also released after Prince Philip was honored with for his services to the Sovereign.
The Royal Victorian Order is one of the gifts within the Sovereign, and the Knight Grand Cross is the highest rank of the order that is normally given to those that served the royal family. There are also other lower-ranking gifts within the Sovereign that are typically given to palace employees and staff.
Prince Philip is also a Knight of the Most Notable Order of the Garter, a Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Notable Order of the Thistle. He also holds the Order of Merit. He is also a Knight Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and has the order of New Zealand, among many other things.
Queen Elizabeth II married Prince Philip when she was just 25 years old. When they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, the queen said that her husband has always been her “strength and stay.”
Meanwhile, the queen and prince’s anniversary celebration continued on Monday following a gathering that was held on Sunday. Earlier this week, bells pealed from Westminster Abbey for more than three hours to mark the special occasion.
On Sunday, Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, as well as his younger brother, Prince Harry, were also present at the anniversary celebration. Following the successful event, the royal family will once again gather for the birth of Prince William and Middleton’s third child.
In the coming months, the palace is also expected to announce the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The couple is rumored to tie the knot sometime next year after Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday on April 21.
