Queen Elizabeth II’s ‘Greatest Mistake Of Her Reign’ Revealed By Royal Historian
Queen Elizabeth II has been doing a wonderful job as the head of the monarchy, but even she has committed a great mistake during her reign.
Royal historian Bea Campbell said on BBC Radio 4’s “In Our Time” that the Queen made a huge mistake when she did not connect with the world of women when she came to power. This error left her eldest son and heir, Prince Charles, struggling to cope in a generation from which he was estranged.
“What she has been is very much her father’s daughter. And what she has implemented in a regime which represents the last bastion of patriarchal power…. What’s unfortunate, I think, for her family and she is that it means she hasn’t connected with the world of women,” Campbell said.
The royal expert went on to say that this mistake came during the mid-20th century when the social relationship between men and women was the site of enormous tumult. Campbell added that this had grave consequences for Prince Charles, who could not relate to the generation that he grew up in.
“What she’s bequeathed her son is an extraordinarily patriarchal regime with patriarchal values. That landed him the midst of a generation from which he was essentially estranged,” she added.
During her conversation with host Melvyn Bragg, Campbell was asked if she thought that gender is as important as character in Her Majesty’s case. Bragg argued that the Queen saw her character as the most important thing and not gender.
But Campbell said that this is where things got difficult. Since the Queen was a woman, this connected her popularity to sense that this woman would bring a womanly tone to her exercise of power. However, the royal historian said that the monarch did not that and this was one of her greatest mistakes during her reign as the Queen.
When the Queen resigns or dies, Prince Charles would take over the monarchy.
