Queen Elizabeth II’s Secret Passage Inside Buckingham Palace Revealed
The Buckingham Palace has a total of 775 rooms, but the white drawing room is perhaps the most special one among them all. Despite being one of the smallest staterooms inside Buckingham Palace, the white drawing room houses a passageway that is disguised as a dresser.
On top of the dresser are ornaments that are similar to everything else that is seen inside the room. However, the ornaments on top of the disguised door are glued to make sure that they don’t fall off when the door is opened.
The Buckingham Palace is currently being refurbished, and it will be completed in the years to come. Details about how the white drawing room will be improved are still being kept under wraps.
During the renovation, the Queen is not expected to leave the Buckingham Palace. The cost of the overhaul is being estimated at over $483 million, and it will be completed on 2028. The focus of the renovation will be on improving electrical wiring, pipework boilers, generators, service lifts, and more.
“The program addresses the urgent need to overhaul the palace’s essential services – some of which have not been updated since the 1950s. These important works will help avert the very real danger of a catastrophic building failure such as a flood or fire. During the first year of reservicing, we removed the highest and oldest risk electrical cabling. We set up a program office and appointed key roles including the architect, design team, and surveyors. We also commissioned a 3D survey of the building which has given us an unprecedented level of detail about the palace,” Sir Michael Stevens, Keeper of the Privy Purse, said (via Express).
Royal officers also stated that the Buckingham Palace renovation is essential amid criticisms that the royal family received.
