Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip reportedly kept files on the women who could pass as suitable brides for Prince William and Kate Middleton didn't fit the bill.
The monarch and Duke of Edinburgh were keen to give the Duke of Cambridge the most suitable wife. However, Middleton did not make it to their list, according to a royal expert.
Robert Jobson made some big revelations about the royals in his 2006 book “William’s Princess.” The biographer claimed that Prince William’s excitement was tampered by his awareness that his life was being scrutinized by the public and his family.
Prince Charles’ marriage with Princess Diana didn’t run smoothly. It came to a point when the late Princess of Wales aired their dirty laundry in public. In her infamous Panorama interview, Princess Diana said her marriage with the Prince of Wales didn’t work because “there were three of us,” implying about his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles at the time.
Queen Elizabeth II wanted to avoid the same incident, so she kept a list of the most suitable brides for her grandson. Also, they reportedly wanted him to settle down sooner back then.
“Girls who were supposed to have caught William’s eye are Emma Parker Bowles, Camilla’s niece, Jonathan Aitken’s daughter Victoria, and Alexandra Knatchbull,” Jacobson wrote.
Alexandra is the great-great-granddaughter of the 1st Earl Mountbatten and great-niece of Amanda Knatchbull, Mountbatten’s choice of bride for Prince Charles. The family has been associated with royalty and Princess Diana was one of her grandmothers. Apparently, Middleton was not on the list of the most suitable brides for Prince William.
“Kate didn’t quite fit the bill on this score. She was financially comfortable but did not have the moneyed background to be one of the trust-fund elite,” Jobson continued.
“But nor did she have the air of desperation that would have placed her in the wannabe camp. She was different.”
Prince William and Middleton met at St. Andrews University. It wasn’t a case of love at first sight because the couple started off as friends before they dated.
Interestigly, royal commentator Elaine Lui called Middleton a “social climber.” According to her, the duchess changed her school when she learned that Prince William was going to St. Andrews University.
“There she got her way into Prince William’s circle – that’s also what we would call social climbing and networking,” Lui said.
