There's no doubt that some may find Queen Elizabeth II to be quite intimidating -- she is the Queen of England, after all -- but that feeling likely gets taken to a whole other level if given the chance to meet her.

Michael Owen, a former footballer who played for many teams, including Manchester United, detailed an interaction he had with her Majesty while on a trip at Ascot.

“When the Queen walked into the royal lift there were perhaps 15 of us outside," Owen shared in his new book, "Reboot," according to Express. That didn't stop the Queen from hopping aboard, though.

“Come on, we can all squeeze in," the former football star recalled her saying.

“I obeyed, taking my hat off as I thought that correct etiquette," Owen wrote, not expecting what she would say next in response.

"'If you’d put your hat back on,'" she said, voice raised, "'we might all fit in!'"

The now 39-year-old explained that he "sheepishly" put his hat back on and revealed that he was quite embarrassed by the experience. “I was mortified. To this day I have absolutely no idea if she was joking," he shared.

Owen might not know if the Queen was joking but based on claims from a royal expert, it's likely she was. The British publication noted that Queen Elizabeth II is known for her "cheeky sense of humor."
