Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana used to be amicable towards each other, but they were not necessarily very close.

But one occasion, Her Majesty and the Princess of Wales couldn’t help but share a laugh together following one hilarious incident.

In the Amazon Prime documentary “Royalty Up Close: The Photography Of Kent Gavin,” the photographer recounted the time when the monarch and the late royal arrived at an event wearing exactly the same shade of blue.

After the Queen and Princess Diana realized that they were wearing matching outfits, they both broke out in laughter. Gavin said that the Queen was visibly amused at the sight of Prince Charles’ ex-wife, while Princess Diana was caught smirking.

“Again, it’s just the expression that she knows and you know you’ve got a great picture, and it’s there in the eyes,” he said.

Meanwhile, Princess Diana and the Queen didn’t always see eye to eye. In fact, Her Majesty didn’t always approve of the Princess of Wales’ style. But what really tested the relationship of the two royals was the publication of Andrew Morton’s book, “Diana: Her True Story,” in 1992.

In the book, Princess Diana touched on her relationship with her former mother-in-law. She said that she sought the monarch’s help after realizing that her marriage to Prince Charles was loveless. However, the Queen was reportedly less than sympathetic towards her.

Years later, the Queen encouraged Princess Diana and Prince Charles to divorce. According to the New York Times, Her Majesty wanted the mom of two to keep her Royal Highness title, but Prince Charles wanted his ex-wife to give it up.

Shortly after the couple’s divorce in 1996, Princess Diana passed away following a tragic car crash in Paris. The Queen paid tribute to the late royal, but her unsympathetic demeanor drew criticisms from Princess Diana’s fans.

“I want to pay tribute to Diana myself. She was an exceptional and gifted human being. In good times and in bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness. I admired and respected her — for her energy and commitment to others, and especially for her devotion to her two boys,” the Queen said.
