Queen Elizabeth II has shared a sweet, never-before-seen photo of her and husband Prince Philip ahead of his funeral on Saturday.
The Queen's husband of 73 years died in Windsor Castle at the age of 99 on April 9, just two months before his 100th birthday. Just hours before his funeral, the monarch expressed her gratitude to those who sent messages following the Duke of Edinburgh's passing and shared a private picture of them on the Royal Family Instagram.
The picture, which was taken in 2003 at the top of the Coyles of Muick, Scotland, by the couple's daughter-in-law, Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, showed the Queen and Prince Philip smiling as they relax in the Scottish Highlands.
"Her Majesty and the Royal Family are grateful for all the messages of condolence from around the world and have been touched to see and hear so many people sharing fond memories of The Duke, in celebration of his life," the caption read.
The post was flooded with supportive comments and more messages of condolence for the Queen and the royal family.
"Sending all our love and strength for you tomorrow Ma'am," one commented with a folding hands emoji.
"RIP Prince Philip and stay strong Queen," another wrote.
"He was her soul mate. Many prayers for the beloved queen," a third user added.
"What a beautiful photo! Thank you for sharing," a fourth netizen wrote.
"Yes finally some private photographs are coming not only the one with duties. We will miss him RIP," another added.
Prince Philip spent his final days with the Queen by his side at Windsor Castle, where they had been isolating since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was reported that the late royal's last moments were filled with his favorite things.
"The whole family got a lot of comfort in knowing that he and Her Majesty got to be together in the sanctuary of Windsor Castle," an unnamed source told Us Weekly, adding, "Spending time with Elizabeth, communicating with other loved ones, reading and relaxing in his home environment meant everything to Philip."
The duke was hospitalized in February and stayed there for weeks. He was discharged from London's King Edward VII hospital in March after "successful heart surgery."
Prince Philip's funeral service will be held at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle Saturday.
