Queen Mother Called Wallis Simpson ‘Naughty Lady,’ Snubbed Wedding For This Reason
Queen Mother reportedly had Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson in exiled to Paris, and she also called the American divorcee a “naughty lady.”
The revelations came from the two-part documentary “Queen Mom: The Reluctant Queen.” Secret letters and diaries also revealed that the Queen Mother wrote to Queen Mary, the mother of Edward VIII, regarding her son and Simpson’s affair.
“Relations are already a little difficult when naughty ladies are brought in, and up to now we have not had the lady at all,” she wrote.
After Edward VIII abdicated for love, Queen Mother intervened in his relationship once again. In another letter that she wrote, the Queen Mother said that she wanted to get rid of her husband’s ghosts by ensuring that Edward VIII and Simpson will leave for France.
And in a shocking blow, Queen Mother also made sure that no one attended the couple’s wedding in 1937. Queen Elizabeth II’s mom succeeded because the couple’s ceremony only featured approximately 20 guests.
Meanwhile, Queen Mother was also behind the plan to make sure that Simpson won’t be referred to as Her Royal Highness. According to royal biographer Philip Ziegler, the Queen Mother was so forceful in keeping Edward VIII and Simpson out of Britain because she knew that there could not be two Kings in the British monarchy.
Last month, the Queen Mother also made headlines after it was revealed that she smuggled 12 bottles of champagne into a hospital before she underwent a hip operation.
In the channel 5 documentary “Secret of the Royals,” Pippa Penny, a sommelier to the royal family, said that the Queen Mother wanted to make sure that her stay at the facility was a little bit more comfortable and enjoyable.
“A bottle of Krug can fetch up to £150 ($195),” she said. And since the Queen Mother brought 12 bottles at that time, this was estimated at over $2,300.
