- The child was in his playpen before disappearing
The authorities in Georgia are searching for a 1-year-old boy after the child vanished from his Savannah home Wednesday.
The officers are holding on to hope the child is still alive and will be reunited with his parents.
Quinton Simon was reported missing from his Buckhalter Road home in Savannah at around 9 a.m. ET. In a news conference Thursday, Chatham County Police Chief Jeff Hadley said they weren't sure if this was a case of kidnapping and foul play factored in his disappearance, Hawaii News-Now reported.
Simon's mother told deputies that the boy had been in his playpen before she discovered he was missing, WSB-TV reported. At the time he was last seen, the child was wearing a light blue Sesame Street shirt and black pants, People reported.
Deputies from across 75 law enforcement departments, mounted cops, as well as the FBI launched a search operation. Many concerned neighbors also volunteered in the search efforts. An Amber alert has been issued for the child ever since he was reported missing.
Several streets were closed as officers fanned the neighborhood for the child. "We used K-9 teams, drones, helicopters, and police on horseback. We conducted grid searches as we combed the area. When darkness fell, a helicopter with heat-seeking technology was deployed," the police department said in a Facebook post Wednesday.
The area surrounding Simon's house remained a crime scene as of Thursday. The search went through the day and was called off when the sky became too dark. A helicopter, however, was deployed at the site overnight.
Hadley told Hawaii News-Now they are very concerned about Simon looking at the nature of his disappearance. "This is a fluid situation, all things are still possible. We don't have any concrete belief in any one theory or any one thing, so we are very concerned about Quinton. We are hoping we can find him safe and bring him home to his parents," Hadley said.
"Everybody here is concerned, everybody is coming here. We wanted to jump in the search as soon as they got here but they still had the dogs out and we didn't want to throw more traces out there for them to try to throw their scent off, but as soon as that was over with we went up there...we all took a trip down Gerrard, all the woods and we've been just about any area as far as the area they are concentrating at," a neighbor, Tyler Edenfield, told Hawaii News-Now.
