R. Kelly Update: Why Did A Friend Post His Bail?
After three days, R. Kelly was able to finally post bail from the Cook County Jail in Illinois, with a little help from a friend. The women, identified as Valencia Love, posted the $100,000 bond for the R&B singer after only knowing Kelly for a short time, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Love met Kelly five months earlier on a Spirit of Chicago cruise, Don Russell, a friend and adviser of Kelly, told the outlet. Love later confirmed that she was a “friend” of Kelly’s but would not disclose how they met.
Love paid the $100,000 bond in four separate $25,000 transactions for each victim that Kelly is charged with aggravated sexual abuse against, according to the outlet. While court records show that Love did indeed post the bail money, she claims it was Kelly’s money, according to KABC, an ABC affiliate in Los Angeles.
"It was his own money. I just posted bail for him,” Love told KABC. She also added that the singer was a "good friend of mine."
Meanwhile, Russell told the Chicago Sun-Times that last year Kelly informed him he had “zero dollars in the bank,” which was the result of him trusting “the wrong people.”
“Money is coming to him, but not as much as he would like,” he added.
Kelly has had money woes over the years as his attorney, Steve Greenberg, told the court the singer’s finances were “a mess.” Kelly was dropped from his record label, and according to Greenberg, was receiving limited residual income from his music.
Love, who has had some financial issues of her own, filed bankruptcy in 2015, according to court records. In 2017, she and her former husband recovered $1.1 million from a wrongful death lawsuit against the Children’s Medical Hospital in Chicago for a heart procedure for their daughter, the outlet reported.
Love is currently listed as a corporate officer at a daycare. She is also the manager of Love on the Blu restaurant.
Kelly’s next court date is scheduled for March 22.
