R. Kelly is facing sex crime charges — a total of 18 counts for Illinois and New York including sexual exploitation among minor girls. The R&B singer is currently detained without bail and, with his career on hiatus, how is he paying his legal defense team?

Kelly is currently on isolation, hence, the R&B singer could not sing and perform on stage. Without those performances, Kelly said that at this point he has no money.

The singer's former crisis manager Darrel Johnson had showed at the CBS This Morning show. One of the hosts of the show asked Johnson how his legal defense is being paid considering the celebrity’s financial situation, and whether he [Kelly] received money from other musicians and celebrities.

“Mr. Kelly does have royalties that come in. So he is living on some royalties that he have. Early on, fans and friends made a lot of donations,” Johnson replied.

Yes, Johnson called it quits Monday, informing CNN, through a text message that the reason for his resignation was personal. Additionally, he reportedly gave an assurance that Kelly was in good hands with his attorney Steve Greenberg.

Speculation rose among the public because Johnson’s resignation came a few hours after he appeared as guest at CBS This Morning, wherein he made one particular statement which stated that he would not leave his daughter with anyone that was being accused of being a pedophile.

Quitting a job for personal reason is rather vague. The specific details about why R. Kelly’s crisis manager resigned amid the tumultuous time in the R&B singer’s life are currently unknown.

Kelly’s fortune, most of it, came from touring and album sales, Showbiz CheatSheet reported. The title R&B king was given to him for a reason —millions of copies of his albums were sold over the years.

However, the recent complications and events, including the law suits, have significantly affected the R&B singer’s net worth. Kelly’s net worth reportedly plummeted from $150 million and as of 2019, his net worth is down to $1 million, Wealthy Gorilla reported.

So what did really happen to R. Kelly’s money?

The R&B singer claimed that a lot of people, who were also connected to his account, had stolen from him. He said he went to the bank to sort things out and added that he did not know what happened.

Kelly admitted his shortcomings, particularly for not knowing where his money went, Time reported.
