KEY POINTS

  • Rafael Nadal is known to be the king of clay
  • But he currently has the best win percentage on the hard-court for the past 52 weeks
  • He has a better win percentage in the past 52 weeks over Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer

Three individuals currently dominate tennis, like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have been unstoppable on the court. It’s already considered a rare moment if someone outside the Big Three wins a Grand Slam tournament. It has been a lopsided affair as these three legends have racked up more hardware than anyone else in men’s tennis history.

Federer has the most majors with 20 while Nadal is close with 19. Djokovic is trailing with 17 but he’s the youngest among the three and is currently in a hot streak. Djokovic hasn’t lost in the entire 2020 and is coming off winning the Dubai Tennis Championships.

But among the three, Nadal stands out in the hard-court winning percentage over the past 52 weeks. Nadal is known to be a clay-court master but currently has the edge in the faster surface.

It’s a surprising statistic given that Federer and Djokovic have the upper hand in majors with hard surfaces. Djokovic has the most Australian Open titles among the three with eight and adds three US Open championships. For Federer, he has six Australian Open and five US Open championships. Nadal, on the other hand, only has one Australian Open title and four US Open championships.

While in total career averages Nadal trails them, the recent stretch of tournaments says otherwise for the Spaniard. The World Number 2 has won 38 of his 42 hard-court matches. The known king of clay has been on a recent tear on the hard surface as he’s tallied a 90.5% winning percentage for the past 52 weeks. His rivals Djokovic and Federer trail him at 86% and 81.1% respectively.

The tour is currently on hold as the coronavirus continues to impact the entire sporting world. The supposed next hard court surface should have been the Indian Wells Masters but it was one of the first big tournaments to call off the games.

Nadal’s most recent hard-court success came at the Acapulco Open where he defeated David Fritz for a Mexico Open hat-trick.

It’s been a difficult time for the world as the sporting community is hoping to resume their play as soon as it is safe for everyone’s health.
