Rajon Rondo is all set for a new NBA journey with the Atlanta Hawks, but this season is not off to a good start for him. The 34-year-old is being sued by a woman claiming that he shoved her and cussed at her and that his girlfriend physically assaulted her during a parking lot dispute on July 28.
Rondo has responded to the allegations, denying the claims made by the woman, named Toktam Jorshari. His attorney, Mark D. Baute, said he believes the case is "meritless" and insisted that his client was polite throughout the encounter. He also said that the claimant was not wearing a mask at the time and was unstable.
"I have seen the videotape. Mr. Rondo was polite throughout the encounter, the claimant was not wearing a mask and was unstable and rude. We look forward to defending the case and winning," Baute told TMZ.
According to the lawsuit, Jorshari and Rondo, who was still with the Los Angeles Lakers at the time, both lived in the same Los Angeles apartment. The woman claimed that trouble happened when Rondo allegedly parked his Rolls Royce SUV in the handicap space without a placard.
The woman said she parked in the adjacent space to unload a table. This inadvertently blocked access to the driver’s side of Rondo’s vehicle.
Jorshari said this drew the wrath of Rondo, who allegedly told her, “Why do you think you can park here?”
The woman went on to claim that the two-time NBA champion was wearing a mask at the time but was screaming so angrily that it slipped down under his nose. Things escalated from there, with Jorshari claiming Rondo, "with an extended arm, pushed and shoved her against her vehicle."
She added that the shove was so violent that her sandal flew off her foot and her keys, which she had in hand, broke into two when they fell to the ground. Jorshari alleged that Rondo’s girlfriend made matters worse when she physically attacked her by hitting her in the area of her head and upper body.
Jorshari did not fight back. However, she claimed that Rondo gave his girlfriend the go-signal to attack her. The whole incident was captured on surveillance video.
Jorshari alleged she was physically injured in the attack, with some of the injuries resulting in "permanent disability." She is seeking unspecified damages over $1 million.
