Ranchers Legacy Meat Recall: List Of Ground Beef Products Affected By Possible E. Coli Contamination

Minnesota-based Rancher’s Legacy Meat Co. recalled 1,200 pounds of ground beef Saturday due to possible E. coli contamination, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection service said. The recall extends to any of several meat products produced on Nov. 19.

Authorities detected the possible E. coli contamination during a routine inspection, the FSIS said in a press release. The affected Rancher’s Legacy Meat Co. products were slated for nationwide distribution. Ground beef items that tested positive for E. coli were held at the Rancher’s Legacy facility, while products that were already shipped were subject to recall.

The products tested positive for E. coli O157: H7, a bacteria that can cause abdominal cramps, dehydration, bloody diarrhea and, in extreme cases, kidney failure. The symptoms usually present about three or four days after exposure and are particularly common among older adults and young children. As of Sunday, no illnesses were reported from the Rancher’s Legacy Meat recall, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune notes.

The affected meat products are packed with sealed plastic packages and possess a “use by” date of Dec. 10, 2014, the Associated Press notes. “FSIS and [Rancher’s Legacy] are concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers,” the press release said.

The Rancher’s Legacy Meat recall presents a “high” health risk to consumers, the FSIS said.
