Randy Travis Arrested: Fight with Girlfriend Drove Him to Booze
Country Singer Randy Travis was arrested early Monday morning outside of a North Texas church for public intoxication. He reportedly told police that he had gotten into a fight with his girlfriend before the incident occurred.
According to Sanger police, a beat officer noticed a black Pontiac parked outside of the First Baptist Church of Sanger early in the morning. He stopped to talk to the driver, reported NBC. The office found Travis sitting alone in his car with an open bottle of wine. He reportedly smelled of alcohol. Travis told the officer that he had gotten into a fight with his girlfriend and was trying to get back to his ranch.
Mr. Travis' speech was slurred and I was beginning to have a hard time understanding what he was saying, the officer said according to TMZ. Mr. Travis was unaware of his location and kept asking me to take him home.
The 52-year-old performer was hauled away in cuffs and booked at Denton County Jail around 1:30 a.m., reported the Daily News. After a few hours, he was given a citation and released.
They take you to jail for at least four hours, time to sober up, the police spokesman said, according to the Daily News.
Randy Travis apologized for the incident in a statement.
I apologize for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl. I'm committed to being responsible and accountable, and apologize for my actions, Travis said through his publicist Monday afternoon, according to NBC.
Back in September 2011, Travis collapsed on stage at a concert at Huguley Memorial Center's 18th Annual Crystal Heart Gala. While singing Three Wooden Crosses, his vocal cords reportedly gave out and he stumbled forward and fell. He walked off the stage and gave a thumbs up to the crowd, according to NBC. His publicists said dehydration and allergy medication was to blame.
