Rapper Ice Cube's Big3 Basketball May See Changes To Tournament After Debut
Co-executives Ice Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz’s Big3 basketball tournament debuted last Sunday at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York. An estimated 15,000 people attended the 3-on-3 half court games, which showcased retired NBA players. The league may be looking to make changes to the rules Wednesday, however, after a slew of players got injured and were forced to leave.
Former NBA point guard Jason Williams was one of the injured players escorted off the court during the tournament. Williams, 41, suffered a knee injury and may miss six to eight months of basketball activities. The veteran point guard got hurt during the latter part of the game when his team, 3 Headed Monsters, played against the Ghost Ballers. Veteran player Corey Maggette who played for team Power was also injured during one of the games. There was no word on when he would be able to return.

William’s and Maggette’s injuries were reportedly announced Wednesday during a conference call with Cube and Kwatinetz, according to the Associated Press Thursday. The call also indicated some of the gameplay changes that are slated to begin the next game in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Subsequent games will run to 50 points instead of the previous goal of 60. A half-time break will occur when one of the teams reaches the 25-point marker. The tournament showcases four games each event, which take about 5 hours in total. Cube stated that the rule changes might make the games less lengthy.
Reducing the winning score may lessen the likelihood of players falling to injury. The Big3 tournament will tour cities across the country. Eight teams are scheduled to play from June 25 until Aug. 26.
There may be more variety of 3-on-3 basketball games coming. The International Olympic Committee announced June 9 that a 3-on-3 basketball tournament will take place during the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. The NBA will hold different 3-on-3 events, including the Dew NBA 3X Tour. Big3 executives Cube and Kwatinetz released a statement to FOX Sports June 9 regarding the Olympics’ decision to start their 3-on-3 basketball games.

"We would like to commend the Olympics for making 3-on-3 basketball, the most played sport in the world, an official Olympic sport starting at Tokyo 2020," read the statement. "We have worked tirelessly for the last two years to get the most loved game in the world played by some of the most skilled, brilliant players in the world broadcast on a professionally recognized stage."
They added, "This announcement by the International Olympic Committee comes at a perfect time, with the Big3 10-game season tipping off in less than three weeks on June 25 Barclays Center in Brooklyn. This decision reconfirms our gut instinct that 3-on-3 basketball is what sports and entertainment fans want to see. We are grateful to FOX Sports and FS1 for believing in this idea early and that fans who are unable to attend the games will be able to watch from home and online."
There is already an established 3-on-3 presence with FIBA basketball and the games are apparently competitive. In the 2016 FIBA 3-on-3 World Championships, the United States won silver. Serbia took home the gold.
